Cleveland Bridge closure

B&NES Council will be undertaking repair works shortly to enable Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) to continue using Cleveland Bridge.  Work will start mid April under traffic signal control, before the full closure of the bridge in mid May for around twelve weeks.  More information is here.

The closure of this major north-south route will have a huge impact on traffic in the city. Local car and light vehicle traffic will be diverted through the city centre.  The diversion route for heavy goods vehicles delivering into Bath is to the west via the A420, A4174 ring road and A4. Through traffic will be directed to use a diversion to the east of Bath via the A36, A350 and A4.

B&NES has promised to publish a traffic diversion plan. It is to be hoped that as much traffic as possible will be diverted away from the city altogether, and that the Police will rigorously enforce the existing HGV limit through the city centre to prevent HGVs short-cutting.
